Which side is ours?

In today's BBC business news:   (link)
"The International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled that Apple infringed on a Samsung patent, which could mean some older models of the iPad and iPhone are banned from sale in the US. The patent relates to 3G wireless technology and the ability to transmit multiple services correctly and at the same time.
Apple said it plans to appeal. The ruling could also be reversed by a US presidential order within 60 days."

What an odd bit of phrase: "...could also be reversed by a US presidential order within 60 days."

Why might that happen? Why tell us this? We're now prepared for what might seem corrupt.

Inside words:  The fix is in.

Is this America vs. Korea? No.
Apple Inc.has most of its production abroad, and "owes" large amounts to offshore entities (thus neatly avoiding much American taxation) - Apple's core is foreign... as American as apple barley pudding.

This week (link) US Senator Carl Levin, Chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, cut heartlessly into Apple Inc.:   "Apple’s products are justifiably well known and used throughout the world. What may not be so well known is that Apple also has a highly developed tax avoidance system – a system through which it has amassed more than $100 billion in offshore cash in a tax haven. ... Apple Inc. has created three offshore corporations, entities that receive tens of billions of dollars in income but which have no tax residence - not in Ireland, where they are incorporated, and not in the United States, where the Apple executives who run them are located. Apple has arranged matters so it can claim that these ghost companies, for tax purposes, exist nowhere. One company has paid no corporate income tax to any nation for the past five years; another pays tax to Ireland equivalent to a fraction of one percent of its total income... The offshore tax avoidance tactics ... offload Apple’s tax burden onto other taxpayers – in particular, onto working families and small businesses."

America's Story

"When arrogance meets access."

Criminality and butchery are on trial in the U.S. state of Maryland. Sadly, we only witness a vast criminal conspiracy falling on a former servant.

In the case of Bradley Manning, arrogance is on trial... Militarism is on trial. Manning's case also threatens the lapdog corporate media, which does far too little to root-out corruption and murderous dishonesty by the powerful.

Why has the USA waged aggressive wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? Military operations by the USA undoubtedly killed & maimed innocent people by the tens of thousands, including thousands of Americans. Led by dishonest politicians and scheming political appointees, a corps of militant goons continues to stomp on justice & human rights with impunity. Duplicity, callous disregard for human life, and murder are proved by the government materials (films & documents) allegedly leaked by Manning. People sworn to protect & defend the Constitution of the United States are simply fraudulent criminals cloaked in lies.

"When arrogance meets access..." is the sound-bite reported widely around the world. Surely the US military prosecutor's catchy phrase wasn't meant as ironic. But the bottom line -- the U.S. government is criminally arrogant to the rest of the world.

Until America's people pay proper attention, "Arrogant" could label most mirrors around the country.

Liberty Looted

Liberty Reserve's banking system was brazenly attacked this week.

I've no money in the Liberty Reserve system. I don't know much about them. But it's now clear the forces of good and "justice" are themselves corrupt.

Can we expect anything else? The 'haves' protect themselves.

I've no doubt crooked people may be involved with Liberty Reserve. But many or most depositors & workers were normal people.

Justice officials did not close NASDAQ when former NASDAQ Chairman Bernard L. Madoff was arrested for Securities fraud; Investment advisor fraud; Mail fraud; Wire fraud; Money laundering; False statements; Perjury; Making false filings with the SEC; (and) Theft from an employee benefit plan.

HSBC, one of the establishment's biggest banks (largest bank in Britain) was deeply involved in money laundering, and last December was allowed to pay the US Department of Justice $1.9 billion in fines. Big penalty, but no criminal charges, and rather quietly handled. "HSBC expressed its regret" and "top executives will defer part of their bonuses" (link) -- Meanwhile, Liberty Reserve is dismembered, its executives arrested, and depositor funds frozen. Monies are now in serious danger of being lost or stolen in the huge mess.

The case is a huge gift to the large established banks. Putting your money with smaller startups risks confiscation or prosecution. We're buggered again by big capital.

Service to America

How many Americans have served the nation, threatened with horrible combat death? Many did not return, and each death disfigures many lives. Some suffer massive injury, and we celebrate their sacrifice. But such words are too easy to say -- Walk in a military graveyard: even in properly maintained grounds, the dead are largely forgotten. The world moves on.

These days few people look with understanding at elders who sacrificed so much.

Sadly, such places as Korea or Germany would prefer to forget...Tens of thousands of young people were butchered. It's an insult -- America's youth was tasked to protect lands now ashamed of their efforts.

Nuclear Hell? Sorry

Cape Downwinders is an organization on Cape Cod, Massachusetts (USA) working to educate a trusting local population they may be in mortal danger in a nuclear accident -- trapped and exposed to deadly radiation.

As of today, 14 towns have endorsed a shutdown of the aging Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth. I believe the risks of accident are unacceptably high.

Corporate officials from New Orleans-based Entergy Corp. claim the 41-year old nuclear plant is safe, although it shares many design features and exposure weaknesses with the Fukushima nuclear plant - also "perfectly safe."

Entergy should not be allowed to operate as a limited liability corporation. Entergy's owners (board and shareholders) should be liable for all future damages, including threat of garnishing personal property and retroactive wages.

Entergy businesspeople will simply walk away if the Pilgrim plant suffers a meltdown.TEPCO corporate officials at Fukushima have already demonstrated: -- Big Capital gets away with any outrage.

US Govt. Kill List

It is wrong that the U.S. Government has a kill list. It is wrong for U.S. government bureaucrats to assassinate people, whether citizens or foreigners, without due process of law.

Personally, I believe capital punishment is unacceptable. But among those supporting state executions, most people would demand a transparent judicial process as prerequisite.

Unknown unnamed bureaucrats secretly deciding who to kill is outrageous. There is no accountability, and there've been admitted mistakes.  The USA has gone rabidly rogue.  Governments collaborating with the USA share murder guilt.

Invest for Tomorrow

The educational system in the USA needs investment, but selfish wealthy resist taxation. Ultimately, offering education & opportunity is far cheaper than trying to imprison the many dissatisfied with a flim-flam  system of fraud and corruption.

Crony capitalism burdens America.

Newt Gingrich & Mitt Romney never cared a rat's ass for anyone. The only reason they'd slow down seeing someone in distress is to pick valuables from your carcass.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel dismantles schools & neighborhoods in the poorer parts of Chicago, hoping troubled families will move from his city.

Teachers are painted as the enemies of education. We've each been helped more by teachers than by school building construction firms or school equipment companies - it's stupid to assault teachers. Big media, who lead the attacks, never helped any of us; rupert murdoch & family are assholes. Don't support that sourpuss. Turn off his media streams. Invest in your own neighborhood.

President Obama generated great ideas when a candidate, but he's still on five year vacation. He's now done plenty for wealthy folk, and squat for the rest of us.

The big capitalists of GM, Ford, Goldman-Sachs, JPMorgan, etc. get public subsidies and no-interest loans; while working university students, factory workers supporting family, restaurant employees struggling to pay a mortgage, get exhaust blasts of capitalist pig flatus.

War on Whistleblowers

Battling accountability, truth & consequences, the Obama administration has strayed into despotism. They wage endless barbaric military operations around the world, undeclared wars of assassination & mass terror, buttressing satellite tyrants who control their populace with our machinery. They funnel our public funds to prop-up & subsidize well-connected private firms, damaging our system of enterprise accountability. They persecute their own government people who uncover / publicize government crimes. Clearly the US government is now corrupt at the core.

President Obama promised key reforms prior to his election:  (link)

"Protect Whistleblowers:"
"Often the best source of information about waste, fraud, and abuse in government is an existing government employee committed to public integrity and willing to speak out. Such acts of courage and patriotism, which can sometimes save lives and often save taxpayer dollars, should be encouraged rather than stifled as they have been during the Bush administration. We need to empower federal employees as watchdogs of wrongdoing and partners in performance. Barack Obama will strengthen whistleblower laws to protect federal workers who expose waste, fraud, and abuse of authority in government. Obama will ensure that federal agencies expedite the process for reviewing whistleblower claims and whistleblowers have full access to courts and due process."

Obama & Biden in their own words (above) show they've long recognized problems of government waste, fraud & abuse. They dangled a vision of reform in order to get elected, but then mockingly imposed themselves at the heart of the corruption.

Obama is (was?) a constitutional lawyer. But he's disgraced himself. Obama has systematically undermined the US Constitution he swore to protect & defend. He's pursued & imprisoned whistleblowers for espionage as Enemies of the State, while allowing the far-reaching crimes they exposed to continue: unimpeded, unregulated & unpunished.

Some of the messengers harassed or imprisoned by Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder & the US Justice Dept. include:
Pundits unfamiliar with the struggles above & below aren't doing their jobs...

Eurovision to mock Sweden

Swedish comedian Magnus Betnér has leaked a confidential Eurovision comedy script

From Betnér's blog:
http://www.magnusbetner.com/2013/05/they-wanted-me-to-be-in-the-eurovision-song-contest/

On request from the production company, Betnér's edited his blog and deleted the sketch after one day. He claims regret at not posting the script sooner -- it might have been changed. Perhaps it will air as below next Saturday? The script was still online today at:

Pretty lame mocking of Sweden. Does such trash effect the millions of Eurovision Song Contest viewers knowing little else of Sweden?  Here's the script:
---------------------------------------------------------

EXT - SQUARE IN SWEDISH TOWN - DAY   The REPORTER is standing on a square somewhere in Sweden. The wind is blowing in his hair. It looks cold and damp.
REPORTER After spending several weeks in Sweden, I've begun to get an idea as to what the Swedish people are really like. They are perhaps the loneliest people in the world. This may sound sad, but the Swedes themselves are not at all unhappy about this.

INT - APARTMENT - DAY  The reporter is in a flat. A female is in the background.
REPORTER The old fashioned family is becoming somewhat unusual in Sweden, as more and more Swedes nowadays are either single or divorced.

FACT GRAPHICS  Over 40% of the Swedish population live in single households.

INT - APARTMENT - DAY (CONT.)
REPORTER The Swedes tend to see great advantages to living alone. For instance, in an old fashioned family, there are quarrels: Who did not do the dishes? Who left their dirty laundry on the floor? In Sweden, this is very simple...

SINGLE WOMAN (HAPPY) It must be me! I'm the only one who lives here!

EXT - OUTSIDE ROSENBAD - DAY   The reporter walks outside the government headquarters.
REPORTER In those cases where the Swedes DO still live in traditional families, both parents take responsibility for the upbringing of the children. In fact, parenting is something that Swedish people take extremely seriously.

INT - SITUATION ROOM PÅ ROSENBAD - DAY  A group of serious men and women are seated around a table. One woman in uniform calls the prime minister on his phone.
DEFENSE MINISTER Mister Prime Minister, Norway has declared a war on Sweden! PRIME MINISTER (ON THE PHONE) I see. But why are you calling me? I am on parental leave.

EXT - OUTSIDER ROSENBAD - DAY (CONT.)
REPORTER "Pappaledig", "föräldraförsäkring", "vabbing". Just like the Eskimos have a hundred words for snow, the Swedes have a hundred expressions for "Childcare benefit".

FACT GRAPHICS “Vabbing = taking care of a sick child”.

EXT – OLD TOWN IN STOCKHOLM – DAY
REPORTER Sweden was the first country in the world to ban corporal punishment in raising a child. In fact, not even foreign tourists are allowed to hit their children.

An Italian family is standing on the street. The oldest son is teasing his younger brother. The dad gets angry.
ITALIAN DAD Merda bambino!
The Italian dad raises his hand towards his son, but then remembers where he is and looks around. He sees a POLICE OFFICER . The dad pulls his son closer and whispers.
ITALIAN DAD When we getta home, I wille give you 18 000 slaps in the face!

EXT - ON THE STREET - DAY  The reporter walks along a street.
REPORTER (CONT.) The Swedes are extremely equal. There are almost no hierarchies to speak of and most work places use a so called "flat organization". However, this lack of leadership can sometimes cause confusion.

EXT - AFGHANISTAN - DAY  A group of soldiers are in Afghanistan, in the middle of the war. They are wearing blue berets and Swedish flags on their UN-uniforms. The commander is shouting instructions.
COMMANDER All right, we're not in Sweden anymore, this is the real deal! Attack on the count of three! One, two - wait, did you want to say something? The commander suddenly turns to one of the soldiers.
SOLDIER 1 Yes, I think we should attack from another angle...
COMMANDER Interesting point. Anyone else? Maybe we should vote...
Suddenly the COMMANDER is shot dead by enemy fire.

EXT - CHURCH YARD - DAY  First, we see a CLOSE UP of a grave stone, that could be the commander in the last scene. Then, we see The Reporter, who walks along a path through a church yard.
REPORTER The average Swede does not believe in God. On the other hand, he or she DOES believe that they will work less next year and have more time with their families, that sitting too close to the TV may lead to blindness, and that everything will be fine once they move to a new home.

PICTURES  A happy family sits around a table playing a board game. A child is sitting extremely close to the TV-screen. A young couple and a real estate dealer walks into a large, bright apartment.

INT - CHURCH - DAY  Inside the church, a priest is preaching. The Reporter is sitting in the back of the church, whispering.
REPORTER A modern Swedish priest sounds much like a semi-intellectual 28-year- old who had too much wine...
PRIEST I don't know, this thing with Jesus. I believe in some kind of higher power, it's like this feeling I have, you know like...
REPORTER (CONT.) Swedes have about the same attitude to their priest that they have to their chiropractor. As long as they're fine they stay away. But when there's a problem, they come crawling back.

EXT - ON THE STREET - DAY
REPORTER (FORTS.) The Swede will always avoid a conflict. In fact, traditional insults have no effect on Swedish people. They will simply take it literally.

Two men are arguing on the street. One of them is French, the other one is a typical Swede.
FRENCH MAN I fucked your mother!
The Swede is suddenly surprised.
TYPICAL SWEDE What? Really? That's fantastic! Good for her! She hasn't had much of a sex life since the divorce from dad. What a lovely surprise!
The reporter is observing from a distance, then continuing.
REPORTER (CONT.) In many ways, Swedish people are extremely tolerant, for instance towards sexual minorities. In Sweden, "fag" is not an insult. But "Homophobe" certainly is...

EXT - FOOTBALL ARENA - DAY  A cheer section of the football audience is chanting.
AUDIENCE The referee is a homophobe, homophobe, homophobe...

EXT - THE STREET - DAY
REPORTER In conclusion, The World Value Survey seems to be right. The Swedes are indeed an extreme people. They are extremely isolated and lonely, but at the same time extremely caring and tolerant. This odd combination naturally leads to much suppressed frustration. So where do the Swedes let out their desires and aggressions? Well... Abroad. In your countries.
The Reporter looks into the camera and smiles.

EXT/INT - ABROAD - DAY/NIGHT  Archive pictures of Swedes that are drunk and behaving badly. They are standing on tables naked, puking etc.

EXT - THE STREET - DAY
REPORTER EXTREMELY fascinating, isn't it? And yet we've still only scratched the surface. Thank you for watching and good night.

American Terrorists

The bombing of the Boston Marathon has given the US government security apparatus more powers to combat terrorism.

But these government security services & our corrupt politicians are America's biggest threat. Our own government has been a costly scourge on America for decades.

Let's consider the threat of being killed or maimed for no good reason. In the 1960s and early 1970s, the American establishment was drafting young men against their will, roughing them up to be soldiers, and dropping them in the mud & jungles of Southeast Asia. All were brutalized, many were slaughtered. A generation later, similar tragedies are constructed across the Middle East. What's most terrible is that shady strategists convince halfwit chicken-shits like George W. Bush and Barack Obama to dump our people into horrendous conditions without good reason. We need accountability for the corruption & brutality embedded in past & present US administrations.

Then we have terror at home. Search online for mistaken police shooting and get millions of hits. Notice that America's growth industry is law enforcement & maintaining the punishment gulag. Deliberately intimidating Federal forces harshly threaten all Americans. Terrible!

Lay Away

In the USA, money buys justice.

I do not understand why convicted fraudster Kenneth Lay (former Chairman & CEO of Enron Corporation and former U.S. Interior Dept. Undersecretary for Energy Issues), could have his criminal indictment, trial & conviction "abated" (erased) due to death while vacationing. The trial was completed. The dude was found guilty. How can that just be erased without any proper appeal taking place and overturning the courtroom conviction?

This stinks. Having the U.S. President as a good buddy probably helps, but this seems a systemic problem rather than favoritism to one individual.

Except maybe "Kenny boy" Lay didn't truly die. He was only 64 years old. Maybe the weasel will be at Eurovision next weekend. He can afford front row seats, but look in row 12 (he'll strive to be inconspicuous).

Neighborhood Parasites

Our communities are increasingly fragmented - people silo themselves in fortified homes, scared of their neighbors and distrustful of authority.

Such conditions are perfect for the corporate parasite, feeding freely from frightened folk.

This relationship should be crystal clear, because it's a recurring business plan: corporate parasites perennially pick our pockets.

Disney Corporation tried to trademark 'Día de los Muertos' -- a day & phrase already a historic Mexican / Hispanic cultural holiday. Walt Disney has repeatedly sucked dozens of stories from our cultural commons while building legal trademark traps trying to perpetuate their parasitic programs. Click here to see a list of Disney pirated plots - thanks to OntheCommons.org

But corporate bloodsucking is much more pervasive than the Disney scam. Many other beloved corporations infringe on our language, minds and culture by taking words & images already existing and grabbing exclusivity for themselves. Many corporations add nothing - they just capitalize a common generic dictionary word:
  • apple
  • target
  • caterpillar
  • amazon
  • dell
  • intel
  • oracle
  • staples
  • whirlpool
  • progressive
  • southern
  • gap
  • mosaic
... etc...

Why are we unable to get royalties for appropriating our words & images? Quite the opposite - our impoverished communities are soon begging at the corporate backdoor looking for 'charity' from these pirates...

The corporations infiltrate our trust systems. McDonalds has recently begun school benefits where they get schoolteachers to volunteer (after their already full & hectic workday), lending faces & reputations to what then seems a more community-oriented restaurant. But these mega-conglomerates systematically funnel away profits & operating budgets to far-off corporate operations, often in offshore foreign jurisdictions. Read more about McWeasels from Abby Zimet (link).

I despise the pervasiveness of electrical and phone wires in & across public areas. It's a filthy infringement. Let's demand ugly wires be put underground.

A wider struggle is appropriation of public space for advertising. Hawaii, Maine, Vermont & Alaska ban roadside billboards - only four out of fifty US states, but a good start...

Don't accept being duped & used as corporate tools. We can be pirates as well. Alternately, we can work to create better communities and a more-solid sense of camaraderie and fun in humane neighborhoods. To improve surrounding conditions, we must recognize & challenge the worst parasites in our midst.

The Vietnam Butchery

No Americans have been legally punished for waging an aggressive war in Vietnam. (No Frenchies either...). The USA invaded a small, rural, largely pre-industrial region and burnt it, smashed it, murdered ...

We left over 500,000 dead. The Vietnam Butchery was responsible for some two million casualties overall in terms of dead & wounded. Many more, tens of millions home & away, were otherwise scarred and brutalized. To what benefit?

We make vile conflict noble if poorly-camouflaged butchery is labeled war.

Who shipped American grunts to the mud of Asia? Most of the worst American butchers died in soft beds, mourned as planner statesmen & fine leaders. A few mangy individuals survive (such as Rumsfeld & Cheney), but they'll soon join their Dark Lord - withered debris pruned by nature.

We who inherit unpaid bills of aggrandizement recognize & apologize for the Vietnam Butchery.
Sadly, aggressive militarism continues.

No Nukes

Nuclear disarmament has been a parallel process to nuclear non-proliferation. The nuclear-weapon states have promised to work toward disarmament. In exchange for eventual nuclear disarmament, other states have promised not to develop nuclear weaponry.

Nuclear disarmament is an excellent goal. Although verification is a continuing challenge, the requirements of safety and security are good counterbalances, making complete secrecy difficult to achieve. There's always danger of serious accident, and improper handling will one day perhaps lead to major disaster.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs have been key focal points for progress with nuclear disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation. But the few states with nuclear weapons have failed to follow-through with their obligations.

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT - link) is seriously belittled by intransigent states not taking nuclear disarmament seriously. A number of the smaller nations have also failed to wholly condemn this lack of progress toward nuclear disarmament -- can we thus label them lackey states? It seems Sweden has become one such state, lacking the courage to consistently support a nuclear weapon-free world...

May Day USA

"The human story needed to be told, the full story, not just financial exploitation, but the devaluation of human life that can happen under the control of an employer..."
-- Robert Canino, US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Working life can be healthy & productive; teamwork toward a better world. But too many workers are unable to find such jobs. Instead they accept poor work with little opportunity. Such labor can quickly mire a worker into a cycle of permanent dependence. They're then highly susceptible to depression and illness; families & communities also suffer.

Employers are hurt when labor cannot be trusted. An entitlement or victimization mentality among workers can fester for years as a sour attitude and lack of job loyalty, but also erupt as a crippling lawsuit that closes an enterprise and puts everyone out of work. No society can operate long with a large proportion of wretched poor. President Obama has sadly devalued the word "hope" -- but aspiration must somehow be nurtured throughout society.

The Nordic model of workplace health has developed from solidly-grounded education. Sweden's Social Democrats, for all their problems, built a far-sighted system of community organization in support of basic human rights. The more egocentric & mercenary Moderate Party now pushes privatization. Plum benefits then accrue naturally to the wealthy & well-connected. Pervasive merchandizers peddle dreams - and often don't deliver as promised. Our communities become "buyer beware" zones - with more choice and more scams. All painfully learn to be guarded, cautious consumers. Fortunately, Sweden's foundations are not too easily eroded.

Lunch with Dr. Mengele

The global community of nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have not done enough to stop the illegal and unethical mistreatment of hostages held at the USA's Gitmo concentration camp (Guantanamo Bay).

Some of these people have been held for over ten years without charge. Some have been cleared for release, but remain imprisoned. This is systematic, unjust torture. Trials for those accused of crimes are long overdue. For others, probably angry at unjust incarceration, new arrangements must be devised.

Now some of the inmates are on hunger strike, and the US government force-feeds them under military medic supervision, although the American Medical Association (AMA) reportedly states "force-feeding mentally competent adults is an ethical violation."

Care and humane treatment are legal burdens for those keeping prisoners. Forced intubation is a highly questionable procedure, made worse if conducted unsupervised and against the advice of trained medical professionals.

Medical & military personnel of other nations should take note, and beware of  immoral and improper fraternizing or collaboration with those rudely violating international law & ethical standards. The torturer may seem congenial, and a delightful conversationalist, but must be shunned.

The American Medical Association and its President Jeremy Lazarus must do more to stop medical abuse of detained prisoners. If not, the AMA should be expelled from the World Medical Association. Former AMA President Cecil B. Wilson is now WMA President - embarrassing? Or a chance to use global leverage to fix the horrible situation at Gitmo.

Korean Stew

Production has stalled in Korea's Kaesong Industrial Complex. At least in the short-term, renewed confrontation & militarism is bad for business.

The BBC quotes the following figures on the 10-year old Kaesong Industrial Complex collaboration:  123 firms and 53,448 North Korean workers producing US$470m worth of goods in 2012; "the biggest contributor to inter-Korean trade."

Unwilling to fall quick victim to frictions, South Korean industry is surely pressuring their government and new President Park Geun-hye. President Park had pledged a renewed firmness in relations, to be "more decisive" - and now two months in office, she's successfully made her mark.

Commentators have variously labeled her & her new government:
"conservative"  (Heritage Foundation)
"hawkish" (Daily Beast)
"secrecy fetish"  (Chosun Ilbo)
"aggressive"   (Global Post)
"battle-ready"  (New York Times)

The Washington Post notes President Park's pledge to concentrate on denuclearization. But they don't explain enough. Making (DPRK unilateral) denuclearization prerequisite to progress may be bluntly saying nothing will be done. The paradox is that doing nothing is not an option; South Korea's hurry-hurry (빨리빨리) society expects growth & progress - not stagnation or backwards steps.

To fully analyze this complex set of issues is sensitive & risky, and sniping from the sidelines is easier than sitting in the hot seat. Confrontation with North Korea is very costly and dangerous. Throughout Park's first 60 days in office, repeated frightening threats have been exchanged over divided Korea. External perceptions of Korea's attractiveness for investment, as a hub for regional business, and as a fully reliable business partner have suffered. Seoul will lose the war of words, because Seoul & Pyongyang are too close for comfort.

Seoul must compete with other regional locations outside Pyongyang's quick reach. North Korea is often cited as being strongly nationalistic and chauvinistic, with its juche ideology of self-reliance, but South Korea also can be dangerously xenophobic. As regards attitude of population to foreign visitors, the World Economic Forum asked "How welcome are foreign visitors in your country?" - South Korea ranks 129th of 140 nations, just behind Saudi Arabia  (Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013, Data Table 12.02). Arbitrary bureaucratic interference adds risk, and the Lone Star fiasco (link) displayed South Korea's resentment to foreign investment. Notwithstanding many positive steps and huge progress, Korea still has many risky shortcomings.

Many people around the world, myself included, deeply & sincerely wish President Park's government great success. But she's a polarizing figure, and her mandate is narrow. Her father's authoritarian rule was firmly backed by the USA, which still bases 28,000+ troops throughout South Korea. Park has a good working relationship with America. But the appearance of more Yankee influence could easily alarm & ignite dangerous nationalism, with tragic blowback.

Is Boston Bomber in Custody?

There are many photos and videos of the Boston Marathon bomb attack. Substantive evidence was also recovered from the bombs.

We were shown a black backpack, reportedly shredded by the pressure cooker bomb planted inside. Was this the same backpack worn by the elder brother? Some unofficial commentators bluntly say "No way, Jose." And the younger brother had a smaller gray backpack... How much were others involved?

The bombing was horrible. The violent aftermath leaves much unexplained. The stories on this event are creepy.

Beyond belief?

Trained Slaves

"Free enterprise" sounds fresh, clean & good -- but too easily and too often, freedom is subverted corruptly for private profit.

This is not to say private profit is bad. Corrupt business practices are bad.

The good worker should be allowed to go into business independently.

But the 'haves' protect their domains. Bosses keep their workers in check. Too many free citizens are shunted to conditions of bare survival, subordinate lives that grow more rigid. Our masters have leverage and good reason to lean on the banks, to press them to deny loans, to keep finance away from workers with aspirations. Violence & arson are also used as weapons to cripple new ventures.

We might say workers need to stand up for themselves. If employers take advantage, that's part of capitalism. Not all laborers want to be business owners. What one person sees as a good secure job, another condemns as exploitation.

Workers who care for their work and bring positive passion to their jobs find themselves ensnared. Dispassionate work is more survivable, though it threatens the entire edifice. Work requires more than trading time for money. Thus is the system broken. Workers eventually get staked in the heart at their workplace; they're fully disposable. Making workers true stakeholders involves profit sharing, or in the case of public sector jobs, community esteem for social service.

But the real tragedy is in our school systems. We force the children to attend, and train them to be obedient. Slavish conformity is too often demanded by our school systems. Clever, eager, creative children are shaped to become trained slaves & dancing monkeys. A conniving 1% exploits the community, and tries to hobble future generations to continue to serve them.

Boston Strong

How could people be so callous & cynical to doubt the terrorist threat exploding in Boston last week?

OK, last week's trademark filings for "Boston Strong" immediately after the bombings may seem calculating, scarred by unsympathetic mercantilism. And the BS commemorative merchandise and BS tchotchkes suddenly being peddled about town can be annoying (Do those without a Boston Strong teeshirt side with terror? It's probably the disguise-of-choice for a terrorist!). But many Boston Strong product dealers pledge some percent of profits to a victims fund...

One Boston girl (link) blogs of repeatedly visiting the home of Zubeidat Tsarnaeva (the alleged bombers' mother) for intimate services

Other critics question the wider significance of this Boston massacre.

Here is criticism by Alex Jones (link) arguing the bombs were a staged false flag event with "patsy" suspects.

Paul Craig Roberts sees the Boston lockdown as disproportionate and a threat to liberty. Watch this clip (link) - judge for yourself.

Here's an argument for the suspect's innocence, from his Mom
(via RT of Russia)

It seems true that if the elder brother were under FBI surveillance, of concern enough to deny him citizenship, he should be on the Boston-area short list of potential scoundrels. Could law enforcement truly be so clueless? Even with poor photos, the elder brother should have quickly been tagged a suspect.

Boston's FBI office has yet to recover from their alliance with infamous local criminal Whitey Bulger. The Boston Globe noted just three weeks ago: "Because of Bulger’s evil alliance with law enforcement agents, the Boston office has a bad reputation when it comes to truth-telling. For decades, Boston agents protected Bulger, a notorious gangster who is charged with a trail of gruesome murders. The Boston office tipped him off so he could escape indictment, and he managed to evade capture for years." Whitey Bulger was given 16½ years of freedom on the run while his powerful younger brother was President of the Massachusetts Senate and later U.Mass.President. Boston's very familiar with brotherhood.

Boston, nicknamed Beantown or Bulgerville, is now Boston Strong

Sandy Hook Remembered

The Boston Massacre diverted attention from the Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre and butchery by Bushmaster. New regulations were discussed & rejected last week in the US Congress. Weren't non-politicized countermeasures possible? By requiring 60 supporting votes (of 100 Senators), this was clear political posturing. A simple majority could have made law.

There is a deeper problem: many American's don't trust their government, they don't trust their neighbors. Too many people feel exposed, vulnerable and under attack.

America's political leaders show most concern for their own jobs. This translates to "you're on your own" for normal people. It's no wonder guns are considered a necessity. But too many people are killed needlessly and foolishly - especially kids.

Cruel Crime: Boston & Elsewhere

Last Monday's bombings at the Boston Marathon (15 April) were an outrage, focusing world attention on America's tragedy and subsequent manhunt. Greater Boston is still in shock, yet there's been a huge outpouring of community support & compassion for the innocent victims and their families, and especially for the three persons suddenly & cruelly killed.

The Wall Street Journal (16 April 2013, page A9 - link) does professionally note others were suffering elsewhere that day: "More than 25 bombings across Iraq left at least 61 people dead on Monday, adding uncertainty and instability ahead of the first elections since U.S. troops left the country in December 2011."  At least 14 candidates for this Iraqi election were assassinated prior to last Saturday's voting.

If not for the Boston massacre, there may have been more concern in the USA for Iraqi suffering. Perhaps some Americans would have contemplated the huge costs of the unpopular US war, remembering the many thousands of American lives lost before & after Pres. George W. Bush declared "Mission Accomplished" ten years ago... How could the democracy we brought to Iraq, at the expense of some US$6 trillion (link) avoid the spotlight last week?

Some people surely would reflect on being manipulated by their government.

Last week's outrage overwhelmed such discussions.
All of us, together, are sudden tragic victims.
The world watches.  Many pray with us.  Boston Strong !
Evil smog?  Wag the dog.   USA USA

Molesting Migrants

Republican Party Briefing Points:  Immigrants

Let's take off the white gloves and talk of illegal migrants.

  • Migrant labor is often cheap
  • Employers favor hiring undocumented migrants as these people have little leverage and are unable to negotiate.
  • Home-grown labor expects minimum wage (or more), costly health & safety protections; seniority benefits; etc.
  • Home-grown workers expect respect.  (Boorrinngg!)
  • Illegal immigrants have no such entitlement expectations.
  • Good workers shut up - and work.
  • Hiring illegal workers lowers local labor salary expectations & job prospects - cutting costs, padding our profits
  • Migrant workers are more easily manipulated than locals
  • Sexual exploitation of immigrants is very often unreported (tragic!)
  • Migrants can easily disappear; few questions are raised
  • Illegal migrants often don't know / won't use the law
